According to reports, both Sony and XBOX will be asking for a lot of your hard-earned coins.
Gaming is already an expensive hobby, and a new report from Fortune says it won’t get any cheaper.
While we still have no definitive idea what exactly XBOX’s Project Helix is, despite rumors of it being a family of consoles, a new report from Fortune claims gamers could expect to dish out up to $1,800 if the company decides not to subsidize its next-gen console, which is due out by the holiday season in 2028.
The report also claims Microsoft is working on a new handheld that is due out in 2027.
“As it stands, the price of the Helix console has internally been projected to cost consumers between $1,200 and $1,800, unless Microsoft decides to subsidize the cost,” the report claims.
Microsoft historically has subsidized its consoles, unlike Sony and Nintendo, but we are in truly uncharted waters now that living room console prices have ballooned.
Project Helix won’t be alone, with Sony’s PS6 also reportedly costing over $1,000 because its memory components cost more than $700.
XBOX’s current CEO, Asha Sharma, is well aware of the challenge of keeping her company’s next console affordable, but that will be continue to be difficult due to the AI push gobbling up all of the resources like memory and storage for data centers.
Oh, and we can’t forget Trump and his abuse of tariffs, also making our lives a living hell on the gaming and tech front.
As expected, these prices have gamers panicking and wondering how in the hell they will continue to enjoy their favorite hobby, while also painting a grim outlook for Project Helix and PS6.
“So Project Helix is rumored to cost between $1200-$1800USD
This thing is DOA, only super hardcore gamers would buy the thing, at this point you might as well delay it until this component crisis is over,” Reece Reilly wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
It’s a painful time to be a gamer. You can see more reactions to the possibly astronomical prices for Project Helix and the PS6 below.
