Marvel’s Wolverine has been accused of aggressive “hand-holding” because of some of its features. Insomniac dropped a new patch that addresses one of its most talked-about “issues,” the scent trail.
No one would have thought Insomniac’s latest superhero video game, Marvel’s Wolverine, would be one of the most polarizing games released in 2026, but it is.
Critics immediately called out the game’s aggressive “hand-holding,” which many felt kept players from exploring and discovering things on their own. Gamers also complained about quick-time events that didn’t really have any consequences if you failed to complete them and on-rail motorcycle segments that people have filmed themselves completing without touching the controller.
After weeks of online banter, Insomniac dropped a patch that addresses scent trails that lead players to certain objectives and the game’s collectibles, pretty much eliminating the need to explore and find them.
As part of the patch, players can now toggle scent trails on and off; these trails lead to the whiskey bottle collectibles. You can also turn off the purple roots that lead you to Nightmare Doors. You can also turn off the audio cues for the material crates that give you currency to unlock costumes.
Story-Critical Senses Will Still Appear In The World
But the studio does say in the patch notes that “story-critical senses will still appear in the world,” which means the “fart trails,” as coined by Washington Post journalist Gene Park, are still on and will point you to your next objective, but were nerfed after Insomniac’s last big update; they are “less intense.”
Insomniac’s community and marketing director James Stevenson says that the game developer will “continue to listen and work with the team to address feedback and requests.”
I am currently playing through the game, and honestly, we have no issue with the scent trailers; in fact, I think it’s one of the best games featuring the popular X-Man, but that’s just me.
