50 Cent continues to prove he will turn on you on a dime if you do or say something he doesn’t like.
In a new interview with Variety, the Street Fighter star took off his boxing gloves and said nothing nice about Courtney Kemp, creator of the Starz hit drama Power, blaming her for budget issues, downplaying his role in the rise of the Power Universe, and claiming she slept with cast and crew members.
If you ask social media, Power is basically the brainchild of the Queen’s hip-hop star, but that is far from the truth: Kemp wrote and developed the concept as the showrunner. At the same time, 50 Cent served as an executive producer and eventually joined the cast.
Regardless, 50 Cent told Variety that Kemp downplayed his contributions to the series. When asked if there was someone he never wanted to collaborate with ever again, he immediately mentioned Kemp.
“I don’t think that she’s wholeheartedly a bad person, I just think that it got out of control for her,” 50 Cent said. “After the success of Power, she would go, ‘I wrote it.’ Well, you did write it, but I uploaded everything that you wrote, and we got a ‘no’ from everybody before we got a ‘yes,’ and I wrote songs that captured, at its nucleus, each one of the leads that we had and that emotionally captured energy for scenes.”
He went on to claim his songs were instrumental in pitching to Starz’s then-CEO Chris Albrecht, saying Kemp “forgot” about his contributions.
50 Cent Believes He Was Instrumental In Pushing The Show & Its Success
The G-Unit general said he had a lot of power pushing the show, leading to the cable network keeping the show, drawing eyes on the show, and making it the powerhouse it has become, going on to spawn several spinoff series, one of them being Raising Kanan, which 50 Cent claimed Kemp didn’t want to happen.
“Half the s**t she was saying just didn’t make sense,” he added.
Well, Kemp had time for Curtis Jackson and, in a statement to Variety, said he was rarely at budget meetings but wished him well, gave him credit for helping make the show be a success, and basically wants him to keep her name out of his mouth.
“While 50’s recollection of budgets and production requirements is uninformed, as he was rarely in a budget meeting, I have never once understated his importance in the genesis of Power. While he did not write nor create the series, he was a large part of its birth. That said, I am completely bewildered by his need to mention me in interviews or podcasts. I have completely moved on in my career, and I hope that the imminent success of Street Fighter allows him to do the same.”
Well damn.
In response to Kemp’s statement, 50 Cent hopped on social media and basically slut shaming her, accusing her of sleeping with cast and crew members in a post that has since been deleted.
This isn’t the first time 50 Cent has taken a swipe at Kemp, but she usually dismisses it as playful banter; this is the first time she’s clapped back at the rapper/mogul.
